Onychomycosis: how laser treatment for nail fungus works

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection that thickens, discolours and deforms the nail. Laser treatment acts with heat on the fungus in the nail plate and nail bed — an alternative to prolonged oral antifungals and their monitoring.

How many sessions?

It depends on how many nails are affected and how advanced the infection is. Several spaced sessions are usually needed. Because the nail grows slowly, the improvement shows gradually as healthy nail grows from the base.

What to expect and aftercare

It is a comfortable procedure with virtually no downtime: a tolerable warmth is felt and you can resume your activity the same day. Come with clean nails and no polish. To lower the risk of recurrence, dry your feet well, wear breathable footwear and disinfect shoes and socks.

Safety and results

It should be performed by qualified staff after assessing the nail; results vary from case to case. At Impuls Longevity (Barcelona) we work with an Nd:YAG laser and design a personalised protocol based on severity.
