The Hidden SPF Rules No One Tells You About
Why sunscreen often causes breakouts — and how to choose formulas that actually work for acne-prone and sensitive skin
Every summer, skincare experts repeat the same instructions: apply two fingers’ worth of sunscreen, reapply every two hours and double-cleanse with an oil cleanser. And while this may work for normal skin, for acne-prone or reactive skin this routine can turn into a guaranteed flare-up. Thick textures, layered SPF, sweat, pollution and overly aggressive cleansing can clog pores and trigger irritation. That’s why dermatologists today take a more balanced approach — especially for clients who battle breakouts every summer.
Here are the rules that actually work, keep the skin calm and protected and don’t provoke acne.
The first rule is simple: you don’t need to apply an excessive amount of SPF. Apply enough to create even coverage and, if you want precision, consider using a UV detector mirror to make sure you haven’t missed any areas of the face.

The second important rule is reapplication. Doing it every two hours makes sense only if you are outdoors in direct sun — at the beach, walking for long periods or sweating actively. Reapplying SPF several times a day in the city on top of makeup, skin oils, dust and pollution will overwhelm any skin type.
The third rule is essential: proper cleansing. Oil cleansers (hydrophilic oils) are contraindicated for acne-prone skin because they often worsen congestion. A high-quality gel cleanser is more than enough to dissolve modern chemical filters and lightweight mineral formulas, without disrupting the skin barrier. And finally, the texture matters. Heavy, sticky, occlusive SPF creams belong in the trash if your skin is prone to breakouts. You need lightweight, breathable formulas that feel almost invisible on the skin.
And now — the sun-safety reminders.
  1. When the UV index is 2 or higher, apply SPF protection.
  2. When the UV index is above 4 and you plan to spend more than 15–20 minutes outside, wear a hat.
  3. When the UV index rises above 7, avoid direct sun exposure altogether if possible.

To make things easier, here is a curated list of sunscreens suitable for different skin types — including acne-prone, sensitive and rosacea-prone skin — based on professional recommendations. And yes, I included a product available directly in our Impuls clinic: Mesoestetic Melan 130+ Pigment Control, one of the strongest and safest SPF formulas for preventing pigmentation.
